Composition

Year: 2002, Red Bull Company Collection, London.

Part of the Red Bull "The Art of Can" Exhibition, 1-13 October 2002, Glasgow

Here I am, posing merrily in front of my Red Bull piece at The Old Fruitmarket on Albion Street in Glasgow, Scotland. Over 160 projects were submitted and exhibited in Red Bull's Creative Contest "The Art of Can".

The idea was to recylce used cans of Red Bull to create a work of art.

I decided to produce a chess set, inspired by the checkerboard blue and silver pattern on the Red Bull can and by Red Bull's promise to "improve and increase concentration".

One of the most artistic aspects of chess is the "composition", which is an artificial position composed by a problemist. There are many rules governing the creation of a composition one of the most important of which is that only a single solution is allowed.

The piece is displayed on a checkerboard I created, complete with blue table with silver legs. The chess pieces are presented with the two knights (or in this case bulls) facing each other.

A panel of UK judges, one being London-based contemporary artist Tracy Emin, picked three winners. I did not win, but it was great to see the results of all the artists' efforts.

The Red Bull marketing team did a fantastic job in promoting the event and over 10,000 people attended the exhibition.

(The work remains in Red Bull's collection. They were granted permission to use it for marketing and promotional purposes, as per contest participation rules.)
